The Wave of Financial Return Crowdfunding: An Overview of the Malaysian Regulatory Response

The concept of ‘taawun’ (cooperation) is not new in Islam. It is highly encouraged among Muslims as part of their religious duties towards the Creator and His creatures. In Surah Al-Maidah, Verse 2, Allah commanded the Muslims to cooperate with each other in good deeds and abstain themselves from any cooperation or collaboration in sinful acts. He commands: “And cooperate in righteousness and piety, but do not cooperate in sin and aggression”. This means that Islam promotes cooperation and collaboration towards actualising any good cause for the benefit of any person or a particular group of people or even for the animal or the world as a whole.....................Download the full article in pdf attachment (below)

What exactly is crowdfunding

Although still in its infancy, there are already six crowdfunding companies operating in Malaysia. One of them was co-founded by Elain Lockman, an actuarial science graduate with a Masters in operational research who was one of the early employees at MDEC. She also had stints at iPerintis [now called Petronas ICT) and Malaysia Debt Ventures before venturing on her own as a consultant for tech clients such as DiGi Telecommunications, Packet One Networks, Green Science and MSC Management Services. Last year, she helped found Ata Plus with two other business partners. Hija purchased a sack of flour and hired a labourer to carry it. The labourer ran off with the whole sack. On seeing the labourer after a few days, Hija hid from him. "Why are you hiding from him?" the people asked. He replied, "I fear that he may ask for his wage."

The Ameer of the town appealed for funds to build a wall around the graveyard. Mulla Nasruddin, who was also present, got up and responded: "There is absolutely no need for any wall around the graveyard!"

The second person angrily says, "Astaghfirullah, you are not supposed to talk in salat." The third person praying says "Alhamdulillah, I didn't talk."

Here is the story of an Imam who got up after Friday prayers and announced to the people: "I have good news and bad news. The good news is, we have enough money to pay for our new building programme. The bad news is, it's still out there in your pockets".

During a Q&A session, a scholar was asked, "Will we get cigarettes in Jannah?" to which he replied, "Maybe, but you'd have to go to Jahannam to light it".

A man who was an adherent of the Magian religion died and left behind a huge debt. Some of his creditors said to his son, "Sell the house and pay off your father's debt."
