The roundtable discussion aims to provide an in-depth exploration of the political, legal, and consequential dynamics of the South African initiative to bring Israel before the International Court of Justice (ICJ) in The Hague, focusing on the alleged violations of international law and human rights by the Israeli regime. The proceedings instituted by South Africa against Israel on 29 December 2023 before the International Court of Justice are officially referred to as Application of the Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide in the Gaza Strip. This session will contemplate the implications of potential convictions for Tel Aviv and the broader international response.

Israel has been accused of various actions that contravene international law and human rights over several decades, including alleged crimes against humanity. The ongoing attention of the international community to these allegations, coupled with resolutions condemning Israel's actions, indicates a complex international stance, often perceived as hypocritical due to the support offered by some states. The situation in Gaza, observed by the world, is argued to be a significant humanitarian crisis, with South Africa taking a notable stance by initiating legal proceedings against Israel at the ICJ.
