Both globally and regionally, the gendered discourse centred around women has evolved significantly. This evolution has been shaped by various factors, including cultural, religious, and socio-political influences, among them the legacies of patriarchy and colonialism. In the Islamic world, the intersections of Islamic teachings and emerging feminist perspectives have sparked critical discussions about gender, women, and women’s leadership, most often within frameworks of rights and responsibilities. On the global stage, women and the freedoms they enjoy or do not have become the litmus test for perpetuating tropes of Islamophobia and divisive politics.

Within the Malaysian context, the nation has exhibited steadfast dedication to affording women a platform and equitable opportunities to actively contribute to the country. Spearheaded by YAB Dato’ Seri Anwar Ibrahim, the Prime Minister of Malaysia, the concept of "Malaysia Madani" in the sphere of women's societal roles emphasizes the pivotal importance of inclusivity, equality, and the dynamic involvement of women across a spectrum of public domains. This extends to political, economic, and social realms, fostering a vision of a society where women enjoy parity of opportunities and make substantial contributions to the nation's progress.

The Global Muslim Women Forum 2024 themed "Muslim Women's Integral Role in Shaping Social Reform" seeks to provide a platform for scholars, researchers, and practitioners from diverse disciplines to engage in constructive and critical dialogue and exchange ideas about Islamic perspectives on Gender, among them: the debates of different feminist critiques; the tensions generated by the category of ‘woman’ in the debates between the traditional and the modern; the growing role of women in the interpretation of classical religious sources and growing intellectual enfranchisement and leadership of women. This global forum aims to explore a spectrum of viewpoints on women's issues, in a hope of fostering a deeper understanding of the convergences and divergences amongst the most significant voices.
