BACKGROUND
73 years have passed since the UN General Assembly adopted the 181 (II) Resolution on 29 November 1947. The resolution, later known as the “Partition Resolution”, provided for the establishment of a “Jewish State” and an “Arab State”, with Jerusalem being conferred a special status and put under an international regime.
Fast forward to 2020, this keystone resolution has yet to fulfil its promise to the Palestinian side. Facing decades of illegal occupation, restricted movements, and limited supplies, surges of COVID-19 cases further debilitate the Palestinians. The imminent Israeli annexation of Palestinian lands, now including East Jerusalem, further erodes the possibility of achieving a two-State solution. Latest developments in US politics also paint a bleak picture, with the outgoing Trump administration rumoured to expedite annexation processes just before the takeover by President-elect Biden.
Under this backdrop, and in conjunction with the UN-observed International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People, IAIS Malaysia, in collaboration with CENTHRA & MAPIM, will be organising a forum focusing on the long unresolved Palestinian quest for justice, security, and dignity.
