Forum: The Impact of Climate Change & Anthropogenic Hazards on Marine Environment in Malaysia
[Watch the event live at 10am on 20 January 2020 on our Facebook Page]
In the age of climate emergency, every citizen of the world has to examine their roles in safeguarding the environment. Every faith teaches us to live sustainably with nature within a cyclical economy. However, the climate change and anthropogenic hazards, driven by the logic of eternal economic growth, are appropriating many natural resources and areas, including the sea, which is the common fishing ground of traditional fishing communities.
Floods, earthquakes, hurricanes and famines are among the most devastating natural catastrophes. But other calamities are induced by human activities, as indicated in the Qur’an: “Corruption has appeared on land and in the sea as an outcome of what men’s hands have wrought: and so Allah will let them taste [the evil of] some of their doings, so that they might return [to the right path]” (Al-Rum:41)
As climate change poses a fundamental threat to the well-being of the people and our planet, some of our development policies could also affect our livelihood and sustainability, including the marine environment and fisher folk communities. This requires an action plan to overcome the impact of climate change and anthropogenic activities on marine environment in Malaysia, in line with the maqasidic principles of hifz al-nafs, hifz al-maal and hifz al-bi’ah (protecting life, wealth and environment) in preserving our sustainability.
