Extremism in the name of Islam is the outcome of radical misinterpretation of the ethical and spiritual core of the religion.  Deviant claims and objectives that distort Islam by misguided individuals and groups in total oblivion of the spirituality and moral features of the religion, and the subtle intellectual and social wisdom of Islam have become an alarming reality and a source of concern for all Muslims.

ASIA WE Research Centre along with Cultural Center of the Embassy of Iran in Malaysia and the International Institute of Advanced Islamic Studies (IAIS) Malaysia, are organising a scientific seminar on “Sufism and Spirituality as Antidote to Extremism and Violence in the Muslim World” to discuss viewpoints and ideas by scholars and researchers on the role of wisdom, spirituality and mysticism in the violent world around us. Leaving no room for extremism, these insights can hopefully enable Muslims to better understand and elevate the status of Islam and its ethical and spiritual callings.

A balanced understanding of Islam will be possible through the alliance of Shari’a and Sufism, the observance of the injunctions of the Shari’a, and the practice of the mystical and spiritual teachings. It is hoped that strengthening unity between the inner and outer aspects of Islam can eliminate violence and extremism among Muslims themselves and in their relations with non-Muslims.
