Speaker’s Profile
Syaikh Nedham Yacoobi is one of the most widely respected Islamic scholars in the world today. He sits on the Islamic supervisory boards of several Islamic financial institutions and is an active scholar in Islamic finance. He received a BA degree in Economics and Comparative Religion from McGill University (Canada) and obtained his PhD in Islamic law at the University of Wales. He works as an independent Shariah consultant based in his home country, Bahrain, and his accomplishments and responsibilities include:
- Professor of Tafsir, Hadith and Fiqh in Bahrain since 1976.
- Author of several articles and publications on Islamic finance and other sciences in English and Arabic, including Tahqiatul-A’mal fi Ikhraj Zakatil-Fitr bil-Mal, Risalah fit-Tawbah, Qurratul-‘Aynayn fi Fada’il Birr al-Walidayn, and Irshad al-‘Uqala’ ila Hukm al-Qira’ah min al-Mus-haf fis-Salah.
- Shariah Advisor, ABC International Bank plc, HSBC Amanah, AIG Takaful Enaya B.S.C, Abu Dhabi Islamic Bank, Bahrain Islamic Bank, Citi Islamic Investment Bank, CIMB Islamic and others.
He received guidance in classical Shariah from prominent scholars such as Abdullah al-Farisi, Yusuf al-Siddiqi, Muhammed Saleh al-Abasi and Muhammed Yasin al-Fadani. Having taught tafsir, hadith and fiqh in Bahrain since 1976, Sheikh Nedham continues to contribute important original research on many aspects of modern Islamic finance. Sheikh Nedham has edited several Arabic manuscripts. In February, 2007, Sheikh Nedham won the Euromoney Award for “Outstanding Contribution to Islamic Finance”. He was awarded the inaugural Zaki Badawi Award for Excellence in Shariah Advisory in 2008.
