Speakers' Profile

Ron Young is a founder and Consultant with the National Interreligious Leadership Initiative for Peace in the Middle East (NILI), composed of heads of twenty-five Jewish, Christian and Muslim national religious organizations working together for Israeli-Palestinian peace.

During the Vietnam War, as National Youth Secretary of the Fellowship of Reconciliation, Ron resisted the draft, led an interfaith/interracial mission to expose repression in Saigon, carried mail to American POW’s in Hanoi, and was Coordinator of national peace marches on Washington, DC in November 1969 and May 1970.

In the 1960’s, Ron worked as Youth Associate with Reverend James Lawson at a Black Methodist church in Memphis, and worked briefly with Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. in Selma. Ron has written two books, Missed Opportunities for Peace: US Middle East Policy, 1981-86, and his memoir, Crossing Boundaries in the Americas, Vietnam and the Middle East.

Reverend Carol Jensen, a retired Lutheran Pastor, is a founder and Co-Chairperson of the Faith Action Network (FAN), a statewide organization of Christians, Jews, Muslims, Buddhists and others advocating for social justice in Washington State, including raising the minimum wage and gun control. Carol is a long-time leader of organizations working locally and nationally for justice and peace, including Clergy and Laity Concerned About Vietnam.

Carol and Ron lived in Jordan 1982-85, representing American, British and Canadian Quaker agencies, and traveling regularly in Israel, the West Bank and Gaza, Egypt, Syria and Lebanon focused on the challenges and opportunities for Arab-Israeli-Palestinian peace. Carol received her Masters of Divinity degree from Union Theological Seminary in New York City.
