Speaker's Profile
Hussein is a Partner at Withers and a specialist in international arbitration and public international law. Hussein advises and represents corporations, individuals, sovereign States and international organisations on international arbitration matters around the world with a particular focus on arbitration disputes in Asia. He practised law in New York and Paris before returning to London where he is a Solicitor of the Supreme Court of England and Wales.
Hussein frequently serves as an advocate in contentious matters and has advised on international arbitrations under ICSID, LCIA, ICC and SCC Rules, as well as ad hoc UNCITRAL proceedings. He has also served as counsel in State-State proceedings before the International Court of Justice. He frequently advises on international investment law and public international law matters, including energy and natural resources, international environmental law, sovereign immunity, human rights, and
the law of the sea for oil and gas companies.
Hussein has taught international arbitration and international law at University College London and King's College London in the UK and Sciences Po and the University of Versailles in France. Hussein is a graduate of McGill University and obtained his LLM in International Business Law from the London School of Economics where he graduated with the highest marks in the University of London.
He was awarded the LCIA Gillis Wetter Prize in International Arbitration for his essay: "A Tale of Two Standards: Fair and Equitable Treatment and the Minimum Standard in International Law." He is a frequent author and speaker on international arbitration issues, including at the British Institute of International and Comparative Law, the ICC, the New York City Bar and the Milan Chamber of Commerce.
Hussein is "acknowledged for his 'leadership qualities"'. (Legal 500 2014). He is described as "a rising
star in the fields of investment arbitration and public international law." (GAR 100 2014).
