Dr. Ahmad Badri bin Abdullah is currently the Deputy CEO and principal research fellow at the International Institute of Advanced Islamic Studies (IAIS) Malaysia, with a focus on maqasid al-Sharī‘ah (the higher objectives of Shariah), usul al-fiqh and contemporary Islamic jurisprudence discourse, particularly in the subject of systems thinking and its applications in Islamic law as well as public policy.

After obtaining his degree in Shariah (UM), he was attached to the School of Humanities, Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) as a reseacher, and then to the Department of Fiqh and Usul al-Fiqh, Academy of Islamic Studies at the University of Malaya as a teaching assistant. He has taught various subjects in Shariah studies include Usul al-Fiqh, Fiqh al-Mu’amalat, Fiqh al-Jinayat etc. He obtained his PhD from the Academy of Islamic Studies, University of Malaya (UM) in the study of maslahah, maqasid al-Shariah and their relation to systems theories.

He was also the head of ’Science & Islam, Technology, Environment & Ethics’ unit at IAIS Malaysia. He was also involved as consultant trainer to several institutions such as; the International Research Center of Islamic Economics and Finance (IRCIEF) and Lembaga Zakat Selangor (LZS). He is currently the Managing Director of Maqasid Institute Malaysia (MIM), the Malaysian chapter of the Maqasid Institute (global) and sits on the editorial board of the Journal of Contemporary Maqasid Studies.

His writes on wide array of topics which include Islamic legal theories, public policy, Islamic banking and finance, Shariah court, halal industry, international relations as well as on the Islamic perspectives on science, technology and the environment. He is a regular contributor to columns in reputable news outlets such as The News Straits Times, The Edge Malaysia, and Berita Harian.
